Salvage My Shoes!!!

Remember those shoes from my other post that I RUINED walking out of a pub? They scuffed up ones? I am proud to say that they are trash no more.

I was so upset when I ruined these shoes. I wear them ALL the time and they are my only pair of black pumps right now. I was about to toss them in the trash after their little tumble, when my mom came up with the greatest idea!

Put GLITTER all over them!!!

I looked up a few tutorials (my favorites being Teresa Does It, a blog post, and Purse Buzz, a video) and found the best way to get this task done!

This is a GREAT way to save those old shoes that you were about to toss! Even better than just saving them, you update them in a trendy and glamorous way!

It only took me a couple of hours to get this project done. The first shoe took significantly longer than the other, because I had to cut away some of the ruined leather and wash them both off to get all the junk off of them from falling.

You Will Need:
-Aleene’s Fast Grab Tacky Glue (I’m assuming any craft glue will work. I chose this glue and not Mod Podge because I wanted the glitter to be on the surface and raw looking. I didn’t want a glassy finish on my glitter shoes. Either way works.)
-Martha Stewart Extra Fine Glitter in whatever color you want (Why Martha Stewart? Ya, it’s a little more expensive, but it is INCREDIBLY fine, meaning the glitter looks more expensive and designer. It is also incredibly pigmented and looks great. Any extra fine glitter will do, though. I chose black because I needed them for classic black pumps.)
-Hair Spray (Or any adhesive spray)
-Newspaper or something to let the glitter fall onto (I used a mailing envelope I had laying around from a recent purchase)

Directions:

  1. Wash the shoes off. The glitter will stick better to a clean surface and it will just look nicer.
  2. Take your finger, put some glue on it, and work it into a thin layer on the part of the shoe you want to cover with glitter. I started at the front of the shoe on the platform and then worked my way back. I picked this method so I could grab onto the heel throughout the process of applying glitter. Make sure to put enough glue that the glitter will stick, but don’t make it incredibly THICK. If you do, the glitter will stick, but when you press the glitter into the glue it will spread everywhere on the shoe and look bad.
  3. After the glue is placed, open the glitter and dust it all over the area. By dust, I mean douse. Don’t be afraid to put too much on the shoe. Worst case, you dump the rest off and put it back into the bottle. You WILL have enough glitter with one bottle of Martha Stewart Glitter EVEN IF you put a ton on the shoe.
  4. Once you have the glitter all over the glue areas, take your clean fingers and press the glitter into the glue lightly. This will help it stick and, when you shake the excess glitter off, there will still be an even layer of glitter on the shoe.
  5. Shake the excess off.
  6. Repeat until shoe is covered. I only had to do one coat of glitter on the entire shoe.
  7. Spray with a light coat of hair spray to set the glitter.
  8. Let the shoe dry.
  9. Fix any spots you missed or that are too light.
  10. More hair spray.
  11. Dry.
  12. More hair spray.

Then you’re done!!!

Apply the glue on the shoe.

Shake off extra glitter.

Repeat.

This is the side that was ruined in the first picture. What a difference!!!
